From Lincoln-Douglas to Clinton-Obama, how things have changed

Hillary Clinton has officially challenged Barack Obama to a debate without a moderator in the style of the Lincoln, Douglas debates back in 1858.

I must say that I do like the idea.

Regardless of all that has happened and all that will happen over the next few months. It fills me with great joy when I think about the fact that 150 years ago these two people, due to gender and race as a collective, couldn’t vote or take active participation in the affairs of this country and both were regarded as second class citizens.

And today, this black man and this woman are both serious contenders for the presidency of the United States.

At this moment in history we can all be proud of this great country… let’s all give each other a collective pat on the back..lol

Now, a moderator less Clinton, Obama debate would be an event worth watching and a debate for the history books. Can you imagine the ratings, it might actually beat and American idol finale..lol?

However, as a former debating society captain I know that you have to be on top of your game to handle this type of debating style and unfortunately Obama is not the world’s best debater and this format has the potential of hurting rather than helping his candidacy.

In addition Clinton would sling so much dirt during that debate that in the end Obama might be left wondering why he agreed to the debate in the first place.

However, the idea is definitely something that a network or an organization should explore for the presidential debates.

Obama’s tune up..

In Election '08, Politics, Race, current news analysis on April 26, 2008 at 1:56 am

every machine needs one..

Barack Obama said today that he’s going to fine tune his campaign in order to reach those low income, white voters that will be critical to winning the presidency come November after losing them by a pretty high margin to Clinton, once again, this week in Pennsylvania.

Obama as I have said on numerous occassions and in earlier blogs needs to reach out and connect with this demographic on their terms and in their communities in order to make inroads into Clintons’ base.

In order for Obama to win this constituency he must convincely and sincerely convey who he is and what he stands for since many even at this late stage still claim to have little or no knowledge about Obama.

Now, I don’t profess to know the inner workings of a presidential campaign or any political campaign but I do believe that if a candidate has had consistent problems with a particularly crucial demographic, like Obama has had with the white working class, he/she should work harder and consistently speak with the members of this group in order to understand why he/she isn’t at least breaking even with their opponent especially if they are both offering pretty much the same policies and ‘promises’.

This is what Obama needs to do.

He should be doing more impromptu stops. He should be greeting the farmer in his fields. The waitress at her dinner and the construction worker on the job site. And more importantly he should look comfortable doing it. He sometimes looks as though he doesn’t know what do in those settings and it comes off as if he’s uncomfortable around everyday folk he can’t appear that way anymore. This is the end game. And in the end game every thing matters.

His novelty, has started to wear off and he’s now got to show them, the white working class, why he’s the best and only man for the job and not just some black guy, with a Harvard degree and a funny name who is the democratic party’s flavor of the month.

I concede Obama, may never win the majority of them over completely for a number of reasons including race.

But, if he fights tooth and nail with Clinton and then McCain for every single white working class vote and he’s willing to convey that he understands and show that he respects that God and guns sometimes go hand in hand in many places in this land, without compromising his own core positions on specific issues like gun control I’m willing to bet the same people that are now voting for Clinton and have voted for a Republican in almost every single presidential election since 1977, wouldn’t ‘hold their noses’ and vote for him come November but will actually on voting day march to the polls in greater numbers than we expect and cast their ballots in support of the black guy, with a funny name because they know that he’s the best man for the job and he earned their votes and their respect just like any other candidate.

Ultimately, for the first viable black presidential candidate it boils down to if he can earn their respect he’ll gain their vote!

Working class voters propel Clinton onwards..

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis on April 23, 2008 at 1:33 am

Women, working class and senior voters push Clinton to a victory in Pennsylvania.

Obama based on exit polling has not made any significant inroads into Clintons’ core bases and this just might prove problematic for Obama come November.

I know, I know  these voters might not have stayed with the democratic nominee anyway come November since they have a tendency to vote Republican, since this is the case John McCain will be the beneficiary of these voters and Obama cannot..cannot cede them to McCain..

So how does he work to get them…

I’ll talk about that tomorrow..

I also like this segment The Insiders with him and Joe Scarborough…don’t like him so much..lol..

I like the feel of the segment..MSNBC should think about giving Ford a show, I don’t agree with all of his politics but I really do think they need some more black commentators on that station..

Clinton wins, Obama comes close in Pennsylvania primary….

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis on April 22, 2008 at 6:22 pm

bring it on Obama..liberty bell pennsylvania..it\'s all about pennsylvania..

Clinton will win Pennsylvania tonight, of that there is little doubt.

However, I want to see how close Obama comes and how well he does with white voters who make below $50 000 that demographic will be crucial come November when Obama is the nominee if he improves on his numbers since the last two primary elections in Ohio and Texas there is hope that he can bring that solid democratic base home but if he loses John McCain might be the beneficiary of those democrats come November.

In Texas and Ohio, Clinton carried 55% of voters who have less than a college education. In contests in Wisconsin, Maryland and Virginia, she won just 36%-43% of those voters. She carried 61% of white voters in Ohio and 55% in Texas.

Obama should not cede these voters unless he plans to massively increase the numbers among two of his coaltions’ core group young people and progressive baby boomers. And I don’t believe there is much room for improvement among these groups so he has to expand his coaltion.

And he could do it here with these traditional democrats.

The white women in this particular demographic might prove extremely difficult to win over since I do believe that a number of them will feel slighted and burned and some out of resentment towards Obama might..MIGHT stay away from the polls in a misguided effort of protest come election day but the men are still fair game..

Obama might just be able to win them over to his side even before then but we’ll have to wait and see but Pennsylvania will definitely help to give us a clearer picture on how things might break down come November..

As usual I’ll be up live blogging the results and if you can, stay up and join me it’s going to be a hot, hot night and frankly it’s about damn time I was getting bored..lol..

Obama’s dirt of your shoulders…

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis, fun things on April 19, 2008 at 4:04 pm

After being ‘beat down’ by Hillary and ABC on Wednesday night Obama got up on Thursday and brushed his shoulder’s off.

I saw nothing wrong with the questions the moderators asked the issues and points they raised are legitimate concerns for many people and although they may seem to be a bit ‘tabloidesque’  to some journalists have the right to ask them and Obama should have been more prepared to address them instead he did seem like a deer got in headlights and that is unacceptable.

Obama should’ve known that the Rev. Wright issue, the San Francisco comments etc, etc would have come up and the fact that he appeared to have been caught off guard is something that dare not be repeated come October and November during the presidential debates.

However, in the end for all those critical of Obama’s actions since then all I have to say is that Obama by brushing his shoulders off not only endeared himself to his youth supporters but also I’m willing to bet got a few thousand more votes plus for once a politician looked cool and natural doing something youthful unlike John Kerry on his surfboard and Mitt Romney’s comment “Who let the dogs out..”.

McCain promises no attack ads during the general election..

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis on April 15, 2008 at 10:00 pm

That’s what he said today on Chris Matthews’ Hardball..I’ll believe it when I see it..hmm I wonder if he’s saying that because he knows the democrats will be able to outspend him maybe 2/3 to 1 come November?

Hmm..I wonder..lol

Here’s another interesting bit of information apparently some Vietnam Vets are planning to ’swifboat’ John McCain by launching a series of ads questioning his military service and conservative credentials and supposedly it might be coming from within the GOP….hmm interesting right?....read more…

I can’t help but to think about the old adage…what goes around comes around

Obama’s little, big mistake…

In Election '08, Politics, Social issues, current news analysis on April 13, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Obama needs to win these guys over to his side..

Obama, when talking about working class Americans should not have used the word ‘bitter’ in any form to describe their sentiments or beliefs.

Although the underlying meaning in his statement is probably true, I don’t think it pertains exclusively to ‘working class Americans’ because it has been proven time and time again that during hard economic times Americans and for that matter people across the world tend to become more protectionist, more nationalistic and more religious.

So Obama’s main point was certainly correct however he should have known the minute the words left his lips, in this 24 hour news cycle, YOU TUBE era that Clinton, McCain and ultimately the Republicans would seek to use this comment to pry open a crack in his, thus far, Teflon political armor.

This misstep has created an opening for Clinton which she has seized upon and to be quite honest rightfully so to try to expose Obama’s vulnerability with this demographic (white working class Americans) and she is seeking, with her beer drinking and shot taking, even as unnatural as it appears, to capitalize on this mistake. And if this becomes a bigger and bigger issue it will work for her in Pennsylvania but that’s not her main target her main targets are the super delegates who will start to question Obama’s electability and may consider, supporting Clinton after the ensuing debacle.

Obama as I’ve discussed in earlier posts cannot, CANNOT afford to make these types of mistakes since these are mistakes that will come back to haunt him in the general election. Hillary will use these comments to win the battle but the Republicans will use them to win the war and this is the main threat to his candidacy.

Obama cannot win the election without working class support and although I don’t think they will run to John McCain if Obama wins the nomination, if he appears like John Kerry did to be elitist and out of touch with the working class and working class issues they just simply might stay away from the polls on election day costing Obama and the democrats the election-once again.

This story has the potential to become a firestorm for Obama in Pennsylvania (since I don’t think he’s going to win there) we’ll have to wait and see what the damage will be in November.

Oops he did it again…Bill Clinton inserts foot into mouth

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis on April 12, 2008 at 1:32 am

oops I did it again....

As an Obama supporter you would think I would delight in yet another highly public Bill Clinton blunder in regards to his wife, current presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Instead I find myself wishing that he would just simply go away-for her sake.

But in reality I know he’s not going anywhere.

I say this because although I’m not a fan of Clinton (in some part due to her and husband’s behaviour and statements over the course of this campaign) I do believe that as a candidate those around her and those working for her including her spouse, should be looking out for her best interests, perform at their best, give of their most and at all times, all times, promote and discuss her best qualities, policies and beliefs.

Simply that a campaign should be about the candidate first and the egos and careers of all those involved second.

I don’t believe that this is what Clinton has received and though she likes to point the finger at the press, men, the right wing conspiracy and all others instead of looking inward at her own campaign in the end when she does reexamine the reasons behind her lost I’m hopeful that she will come to the conclusion that her arrogance and the incompetencies and shortcomings of her staff and her husband are the main contributing factors in her lost of the nomination.

With all the high profile gaffes, blunders and missteps, and ill conceived strategies, mismanagement of money etc, etc from her top staff and Bill Clinton himself over the course of this entire campaign I am left wondering about the sincerity and frankly the capabilities of all of those involved with the Clinton campaign and I’m hoping against all hope that their role in an Obama candidacy would be miniscule.
