Obama, the ‘white talking’ black guy..

In Election '08, Politics, Social issues, current news analysis, you gotta be kidding me.. on June 26, 2008 at 2:29 am

According to Ralph Nader, consumer advocate and presidential candidate (and yes he’s running this time too..lol) thinks that Obama is talking white in order to appease or appeal to ‘white guilt’ (sic)..

You know I find this whole phenomenon of ‘talking white’ so hilarious that one, I can’t believe I’m even writing about it and two, I can’t believe that Ralph Nader, an intelligent man by most estimates, would even use that terminology in a sentence!

However, according to Nader, ’talking white’ means:

” He wants to show that he is not a threatening … another politically threatening African-American politician..he wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he’s coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it’s corporate or whether it’s simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up.”

You know, if I had Nader’s ear, I would tell him this.. “Bro, that’s not talking white, that’s talking smart..,” LOL..

Imus doesn’t matter anymore..I think…

In Politics, Race, Social issues, current news analysis on June 24, 2008 at 5:39 pm

So Imus has made another stupid remark that he claims wasn’t really stupid but actually sarcastic.

And that he was actually making a comment on the racial profiling of black athletes.

First of all if you believe that I’m pretty sure you must believe in the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny as well right? LOL

But to tell you the truth, I don’t care what Imus has to say anymore. As for Adam Jones..(he’s another story altogether) he might owe him an apology but if he was just making a political commentary on race what does he have to apologize for? LOL..Boy he’s between a rock and a hard place again isn’t he?

Anyway, you see, I really do believe his ‘real’ platform was taken away from him and since he’s lost that major voice peice he has become almost as irrelevant in my world as Bill O’Reilly!

You see, I have more important topics and issues to worry and talk about i.e the first black presidential candidacy. To me, that’s waaaaaaaaay more important than Imus and his rantings.

We’re on the verge of having our first black president and our first black first lady and I have watched as community upon community across this nation has embraced that prospect with open arms and that shows me that things are indeed getting better when it comes to race relations in this country.

And although we’re still a long way of from a utopia (hell I’m still told, albeit occassionaly “you’re, different, you’re not like other black people..” lol) I can admit that people that think and behave like Imus in regards to race and gender (and this includes the black ones too) are slowly going the way of the dinosaurs.

And I say it couldn’t come sooner!

Olympic fever..I have it bad..

In Social issues, current news analysis, fun things on June 23, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Yesterday, I watched the US Olympic trials in Judo and women and men’s Greco-Roman wrestling on MSNBC.

Yes, I said  women’s wrestling I didn’t know that women wrestle at the Olympics? Did you? Apparently it became an Olympic sport in 2004..hmm..I don’t know how that slipped by me, well anyway, add that sport to my Olympic watching list..

You see, every four years I get a ‘fever’ around this time and the only relief comes at the end of the summer games but don’t worry I’m going to enjoy every single moment of my ‘Olympic fever’.

Now, I’m not a huge sports fan but every four years I become a sports fanatic…my television is set permanently on the station covering the Olympics and I even stay up till the wee hours of the morning watching and cheering on competitors in sports that I honestly only care about every four years ..like..rowing and table tennis (to all those people out there who love and play these sports, I mean no offence, they are FANTASTIC sports….lol).

I jump up and down when my team wins and I cry when they lose.

I cheer and root for the underdog in the fencing competition and I scream at the T.V, when my favorite gymnast steps ‘out of bounds’ and I do a little dance when she executes a perfect routine on the uneven bars and then sticks the landing.

I root for the sole competitor from that tiny, tiny island state and I watch in admiration as he/she finishes a race that we all knew he/she had no chance of winning.

And I watch with a proud and optimistic heart as the athletes from Iran and the US shake hands before and after a match of volleyball (although I don’t know if these two have ever met on a volleyball court…you get the idea..lol).

The Olympics brings out the best in athletes and in a way it brings out the best in me, maybe that’s why I love watching it so very, very much…

Clinton supporters should ‘get over it’..

In Election '08, Politics, Social issues, current news analysis, women's issues on June 21, 2008 at 3:55 am

If they want to win back the White House come November.

Apparently Obama during a meeting with the Black Congressional Caucus made this statement in reference to the ‘healing’ that still needs to be done by many Clinton supporters,

I need to make a decision in the next few months as to how I manage that since I’m running against John McCain, which takes a lot of time. If women take a moment to realize that on every issue important to women, John McCain is not in their corner, that would help them get over it.

Apparently, Rep Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, an ardent Clinton supporter took offense to the last three words, ‘get over it’ and she told Obama as much.

However, though I’m sure Obama meant no offense I must say that I do believe that those Clinton supporters who are still harbouring ill feelings towards Obama should ‘get over it’. Clinton lost, he won but WE all want to win come November and we can’t do that if they don’t and wouldn’t get over the primary results.

We can’t win in November with a divided party and in this election unlike many others in the past, every single vote and I mean EVERY single vote will matter. This election the choice couldn’t be more simple.

Do you want another eight years of disaster or eight years of prosperity?

Believe me, I can understand how many of her supporters feel in some of my earlier posts I was leaning towards not supporting Clinton or the Democrats if SHE won but I finally came to the conclusion that I want what’s best for America and regardless of the outcome between the two, Obama and Clinton, voting for John McCain was not an option!

And I hope that Clinton’s supporters realize that before it’s too late.

Besides, like my mom always said to me when I lost a race (I did athletics in high school..), ” There’s always next time…”

Michelle Obama does NOT need an image makeover..

In Election '08, Politics, Race, current news analysis, women's issues on June 19, 2008 at 6:19 am

Here’s why..

How many of us have attractive, intelligent, out-spoken, confident women in our family? I bet you can name at least a couple would you CHANGE her/them?

How many of us know of a woman who would put us in our place in a minute if we got out of line? And that includes your mom, would you tell HER to shut up? You wouldn’t dare….lol

How many of us know of a woman/women that are just as witty and just as sharp tongued as any man? And that could include the female co-worker who just told you that ‘dirty’ joke..(come on, we all know and like her..lol..)

How many of us know of a woman that pulled herself up by her bootstraps, kept her head down and powered through and MADE IT against all odds? Hasn’t she earned our respect?

She’s the woman, who was the first in her family to get a college education, or the high school drop out who refused to take welfare and worked two jobs to support her family and is now the proud matriarch of a family, loved and respected by all, or even the girl next door who took a few wrong turns but finally got her act together and though she doesn’t have the fancy degree or the greatest job everybody in the neighborhood is glad to see that she’s not doing that ’s$%$’ anymore…

I ask again how many of us know of a woman/women like that?

MICHELLE OBAMA, is not and will not be the typical first lady but this country is not the typical country.

Her image does not need softening, neither does it need a makeover or even a ‘re introduction’ what the Obama camp needs to do is allow Michelle to be Michelle.

She’s a daughter, sister, wife, mother and a working woman…tell me how many women are all those things and then some?

Yes, she might say some controversial things. Yes, she might make a few slip ups that could cost Obama a few news cycles. And yes she should be a bit more careful when she’s on the stump but in the end Michelle Obama is who she is and unlike some who claim that she too, is applying for the job of ‘first lady’ I beg to differ the job of first lady is already pre-determined, if he wins you can be assured she’s gonna get the job but the role just like the office will change somewhat depending on the person who occupies it.

As an intelligent, attractive, outspoken, confident and less I forget ‘fashionable’, lol, black woman, for the first time in my life probably and hopefully, fingers and toes crossed, next year I will see a black woman who too exemplifies all these qualities be called ‘Madam First Lady’.

In the past our first ladies were white and we admired (Jackie Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt are two of the seven women I would like to have dinner with..if it were possible…)  and continue to admire their personal traits and qualities.

In the future, our first lady might be an attractive, intelligent, out-spoken, confident, fashionable black woman and I’m willing to bet that we wouldn’t stop admiring and respecting those qualities in her.

Al Gore endorses Obama..BIG SURPRISE..

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis on June 17, 2008 at 4:46 am

Former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore endorsed Barack Obama in Detroit a few hours ago..

Who didn’t see that coming?

Now what would be a surprise is if Obama names him as his running mate..and WE KNOW that ain’t going to happen…LOL

No more ‘baby daddies’ but more Fathers…

In Election '08, Politics, Race, Social issues, current news analysis, women's issues on June 17, 2008 at 4:26 am

This past Sunday at a black church in Chicago Barack Obama talked about the epidemic that has infected and continues to spread throughout the black community-absentee fathers.

I applaud him for having the guts to talk about this issue, at a black church, to a black audience on Father’s Day and I seriously hope he continues to talk about it every single chance he gets not just on Father’s Day. But Obama and high profile celebrities like Bill Cosby shouldn’t be the only ones addressing this issue this is a national issue and it calls for a national solution.

Here are the stats: ” Nearly 40 percent of American children will spend some time without a father present. More than 60 percent of African-American children live in single-parent households.. among more recent births, that rate is above 70 percent.”

This is unacceptable!

Yes, I know, we didn’t create the problem but we should all be part of the solution because we all have a vested interest in making sure that the majority of black youths are able to fully realize their potential and that black single parent homes become the exception rather than the rule.

In a society that preaches that every child should have a decent shot at making it in America can we HONESTLY say that these children, many from low income families and with ever present economic and social barriers, will have or have that shot if we allow men to be mere absent ‘baby daddies’ rather than committed fathers?

Tim Russert is dead!

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis on June 13, 2008 at 7:51 pm

OMG!! I can’t believe this but MSNBC is reporting that Tim Russert, the moderator of Meet The Press, NBC News Washington Bureau Chief and a great, great journalist is dead..

I’ve always kept a list of people that I would like to meet and Tim Russert was one of them, his line of questioning of guests on his show or candidates at a debate was truly fair and balanced and this garnered my admiration and respect while his overall ’down to earth’ television persona brought many a smile to my face…I still can’t believe that he’s gone..man…

Washington D.C, the politcal world, in fact the entire world will not be the same without him, he will truly be missed…

Rocking Rachel Maddow..

In Election '08, Politics, Social issues, current news analysis, women's issues on June 7, 2008 at 6:17 pm

I had never heard of Rachel Maddow until a few months ago but from all that I’ve seen and heard Rachel Maddow rocks..

For all of you who watch MSNBC you know her she’s a regular MSNBC analyst but before that sweet guest spot she had been hosting and continues to host a regular show on Air America Radio.

Anyway, I know I’m kinda biased in my support of her but even if you don’t agree with her opinions you’ve got to give her her props, she’s smart, funny, opinionated and she can hold her own against the conservative and Republican big boys i.e Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough.

Now who wouldn’t love a woman like that?

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Senator Hillary Clinton..

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis on June 7, 2008 at 4:33 pm

In a few minutes Hillary Clinton will concede to Barack Obama at a rally today at the National Building Museum.

Regardless of all that has been said about Senator Clinton, including many comments I have made on this blog, I congratulate her and her supporters on a job well done!

WEll DONE, MY FRIENDS!!!

Many of us have not always agreed with the tactics you and your staff chose, in order to reach the highest office in the land, however your historic campaign has shown men and women alike that the presidency of the United States is truly, within the grasp of female hands.

Senator Clinton will seek to not only endorse Obama but to unify the Democratic Party by urging her supporters in particular to support and vote for the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Frankly I don’t know if her supporters will fall into line behind Obama however her efforts from henceforth will prove how much she cares about her own legacy, her party and her country.

And should she help to deliver the White House in 2008, to Democratic hands, she can rightfully claim a legacy of her own, while seeking to create a future and a career fully detached from that of her husband’s and for that any woman deserves RESPECT!

Hillary Clinton is a woman scorned..

In Election '08, Politics, current news analysis, women's issues on June 4, 2008 at 8:32 pm

So last night she refused to concede defeat or even acknowledge Obama’s victory while at the same time she kept sending word via media reports and ‘exclusives’ that she’s ‘open’ to the VP slot.

Today, with yet another day passing and her stubborn refusal to concede defeat she has dispatched her surrogates and campaign staff to various outlets around the country with an agenada of pushing for Obama to give her the VP slot.

How arrogant!

How ungracious!

How unbelievable!

I understand that this is a difficult time for Senator Clinton she has lost a race and a nomination that was once inevitably hers but if the shoe was on the other foot would Obama and his supporters have any clout in convincing her and her people in choosing him as her VP?

Come on!!

Hillary Clinton is behaving like a woman scorned and a vindictive one at that and in the end it will cost her and her husband their reputations and their standing within the democratic party-their strong arm, underhanded tactics have already cost her the nomination I guess they figure they have nothing else to lose.

***Update*** She plans to concede and congratulate Obama on Saturday at an event to be held in D.C.

A change has finally come to American politics..

In Barack Obama, Election '08, Politics, Race, Social issues, current news analysis on June 4, 2008 at 1:20 am

He did it!

They did it!

We did it!!

The Democratic Party’s Presidential nomination is ours and the next step is the presidency of the United States of America ..THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING!!!

Will it be today?

In Election '08, Politics, Race, current news analysis on June 3, 2008 at 6:06 pm

Today could be the day that Barack Obama, a black man, a young, black man, finally clinches the Presidential nomination of the Democratic Party for the first time ever in the history of the United States!

Will I watch the first black president of the United States, the first black first lady and the first black family walk onto a stage in St.Paul, Minnesota later this evening to cheers and screams of happiness from a predominatly white audience?

Have I and will I continue to watch the hopes and dreams of a people, of a country become automatically embodied in the life and work of one man, once again?

Will I watch today in awe as a baton is passed from one generation to another?

Has this all been a dream?

Have I and thousands of others like me been living in a fantasy world for the last 16 months?

No!

Today is the day that everything changes.

Today is the day that we start building a new and brighter future together!

Today is the day that we recognize that nothing will ever, ever be the same again and yet with that knowledge we walk gallantly into the future better prepared and significantly more uplifted than we have ever been in the past.

Today is not just Barack Obama’s day..today, is OUR day!!!
