Barack Obama is doing his ’presidential thing’ today.
He’s out there selling himself, his party and his recovery and reinvestment plan. Remember it’s no longer the economic stimulus package. They’ve dropped that loser name for a more uplifting one-recovery and reinvestment sounds so much better and it kinda makes you feel good about the whole economy thing doesn’t it? ‘ Cause who doesn’t feel good a rescuing things? Go ahead roll your eyes and laugh out loud..
Will this work? Can our celebrity presidentpersuade a skeptical and depressed public to endorse and support a plan that offers little or no guarantees?
If the numbers edge up slightly I will be surprised. Because, right now, it doesn’t appear as if anything can get the economy and markets moving again. And the events of the past six months have forced many of us to become even more pessimistic and fearful and this will probably continue until the average person can see tangible improvements in his/her daily life. People need to have more money in their pockets and they also need to see others spending money, at the mall, at the dealerships, at their local high end grocery store etc, etc in order to boost their confidence.
However, that leads us to this inevitable conundrum how do we improve the economy if attitudes about the economy remain uncertain and despondent? The market is a creature of the people and vice versa so if people are depressed and scared they don’t spend and we need to spend in order for businesses to invest in jobs, products and services.
President Obama is trying to convince us that government spending is our only option, i’m already convinced, but for a country built on choices and alternatives that is going to be a very bitter pill to swallow.
At his final G8 summit in Japan, George Bush, the President and leader of the most powerful nation in the world and the nation with the biggest responsibility TO the world (sincewe consume 25% of the world’s resources) told world leaders as he left the summit, right after rejecting global climate change targets, with a smile and a wave, “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.“
No. This is not a joke.
The most powerful man in the world and the leader of our country has once again shown the utmost disrespect to our allies and the people of the world with his comments and actions.
Regardless of your political persuasion you have to agree that comments such as these are not helpful to our image abroad and do little to advance our international political interests.
I just have to keep telling myself just six more months..just six more months.
In recent weeks Obama has been shifting his positions on issues and has been moving slowly toward the center.
He has begun to take a more moderate stance on specific issues including gun control, foreign policy, and the death penalty and he’s even touting his religious creds by saying that he wants to expand the faith based initiative program started by George Bush!
Boy, the gall of this man he actually believes he can and wants to win this thing!
And apparently a lot of his supporters on the left are hopping mad at him for wanting to do just that.
Ok, they aren’t really mad at him for that, but a lot of his supporters on the left are probably a bit confused by his actions and words so far.
However, as one of those left leaning supporters I’m not a bit surprised or even mad.
Why?
‘Cause I want him to win and I want a democratic controlled Congress and Senate come November too!
And I know that this country is not going to elect a democratic candidate for president that is seen as way too liberal in the same vein it wouldn’t elect a Republican that is seen as far too conservative.
Obama knows this he’s seen what has happened to candidates that are perceived as way too liberal.i.e John Kerry and *Al Gore (you know why that asterisk is there, no need for an explanation..lol) and he’s being proactive by taking centrist stances on issues that are important to a lot of people in this country but where the shades of grey are so numerous that taking a far left or far right stance could be seen as ludicrous and taking such stances leaves you wide open for attack.
Obama is doing what he has do in order to win.
And I’m not mad at him.
And less we forget he’s a politician and he has an agenda. That agenda meshes a lot with what most of us on the left want to see occur in this country but remember he’s not the second coming of Christ, nor is he the next Martin Luther King so when he starts to tactfully shift some of his positions to the center we shouldn’t get mad or upset that is of course if we want to win the White House in November.
Today could be the day that Barack Obama, a black man, a young, black man, finally clinches the Presidential nomination of the Democratic Party for the first time ever in the history of the United States!
Will I watch the first black president of the United States, the first black first lady and the first black familywalk onto a stage in St.Paul, Minnesota later this evening to cheers and screams of happiness from a predominatly white audience?
Have I and will I continue to watch the hopes and dreams of a people, of a country become automatically embodied in thelife and work of one man, once again?
Will I watch today in awe as a baton is passedfrom one generation to another?
Has this all been a dream?
Have I and thousands of others like me been living in a fantasy world for the last 16 months?
No!
Today is the day that everything changes.
Today is the day that we start building a new and brighter future together!
Today is the day that we recognize that nothing will ever, ever be the same again and yet with that knowledge we walk gallantly into the future better prepared and significantly more uplifted than we have ever been in the past.
Today is not just Barack Obama’s day..today, is OUR day!!!
So says Harry Reid Senate Majority Leader and Speaker Nancy Pelosi in anarticle on the New York Times website Harry Reid said, “By this time next week, it will all be over, give or take a day,”
Wanna bet Ms.Clinton and her supporters say, “Not so fast you two….,” LOL..
So the Obama campaign has sent out a questionnaire/survey soliciting information from supporters upon completion you can offer any suggestions or advice you have for Obama and the upcoming general election campaign.
I like it.
I like it a lot.
I have never heard of a campaign doing something like this before just as I had never heard of a campaign asking for just five dollars the Obama campaign have broken lots of new ground this political season. Haven’t they? LOL
It can be argued that by actively requesting the advice of the ‘average girl and guy’ supporter Obama continues to fuel his campaign by helping to contribute to the feeling that every single person in his campaign matters no matter how small, they are just as powerful as his closest advisers.
It may be just a feeling but it works and it works well.
You can bet that present and future political campaigns are taking notes.
What’s this? Do all the Clintons have plans of occupying the White House?
First the dad got it, now the mom wants it and soon the daughter might go after it..man, I’m serious, the Clintons seem to think that the White House is their permanent home address..lol
All I have to say is if Chelsea Clinton plans to run for any office in this country, she’s gotta toughen up quite a bit and acquire some thicker skin. Cause thequestions are going to be a whole lot tougher than the ones (or lack thereof) she got from a college students.
In addition, she wouldn’t or shouldn’t have the protection of her parents anymore and disparaging comments on the scale like the ones made by MSNBC’s David Shusterare going to come fast and furious and the journalists that state their observations aren’t going to be suspended or disciplined for reporting their conclusions instead they will be encouraged.
Here’s another installment of my where are they (the former presidential nominees) now….
Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter remember him? He too thought he had a chance of becoming the Republican nominee for President but those thoughts and his campaign should have evaporated almost as fast as a pool of water in Death Valley. Instead he dragged it out until January 19th of this year.
So, over the weekend I started thinking about all the presidential nominees that have come and gone since 2007!
Where are they? What are they doing? What were they names again..lol?
I’m just saying..I can’t remember all their names and I doubt you can too..go on..try…try to list all the former perspective nominees on the republican side I bet you don’t get more than four! Without cheating, no Wikipedia…lol.
Anyway, I decided that each day this week I’m going to feature one of the candidates and their going-ons since they dropped out the race! Now I don’t claim to have super sleuthing powers but the net is a great, great thing and whatever I find out I’ll post and if you find something out as well post it…
So let’s begin my version of where are they now with former mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani.
Can you imagine spending 40 million dollars to end up a McCain surrogate/spokesman a job that you would’ve got anyway? Man that’s gotta cut deep but on the flip side he now has more time to go shopping with Judy!!!
Look at that smile on John McCain…could it be any bigger!!! LOL
